Sunderland Libraries are hosting a series of free family film screenings in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, during the upcoming February half-term and throughout March. These events offer local parents and carers a way to keep children entertained without any cost during the school holidays.

The movie Elemental will be shown at Houghton Library on Newbottle Street on February 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM. Families can also watch the film at Washington Library in Independence Square on February 27, 2026, at 1:00 PM.

Screenings will continue in March with the Shaun the Sheep Movie at the Washington branch on March 14, 2026, and the Houghton branch on March 21, 2026. These free sessions are supported by Sunderland City Council to provide accessible activities for families across the region.

Alongside the films, the libraries are holding Virtual Reality taster sessions and craft workshops during the half-term break. Children can also take part in digital skill sessions where they can design and 3D print their own fidget spinners.

The programme is part of a plan by Culture House Sunderland to turn local library branches into modern community hubs. This initiative focuses on giving residents in residential areas better access to technology and cultural experiences.
