Former England midfielder Jill Scott MBE is urging people in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear to join a mountain-hiking fundraiser to raise money for the Foundation of Light. The fundraiser was announced on 9 February 2026 to support the Foundation’s new five-year ‘Brighter Tomorrow’ strategy, which aims to improve local health, education and employability.
The Foundation of Light’s flagship physical challenge, the “25 Peaks in 25 Hours” challenge, will see participants tackle 25 peaks in the Lake District across two days, covering 40km+ and more than 4,262 metres of ascent. The event runs from 10–13 July 2026 (with two days of hiking during that period) and includes climbs of peaks such as Helvellyn, Great Gable and Scafell Pike.
All funds raised will go to the Foundation of Light to help deliver its ‘Brighter Tomorrow’ five-year strategy. Scott, who grew up in Sunderland and joined the Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2024, is taking a leading role in promoting the event as part of the charity’s 25th-anniversary programme.
Participants pay a £95 registration fee (payable on booking and non-refundable) and are asked to meet a minimum fundraising target of £1,200 per person. The group will use Elterwater Hostel in the Langdales for accommodation during the challenge, and the route is described by the Foundation as approximately a 40km+ trek over the two days.
