Man Charged Following Fatal Sunderland Hit-And-Run

A 27-year-old man has been charged after 59-year-old Diane Jones was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The incident took place shortly before 11:00pm on Saturday, February 14, 2026, near the junction of Durham Road and Arbroath Road.

According to Northumbria Police, Ms. Jones was struck by a car while crossing the road in the Farringdon area. Reece Roberts, of Florida Street in Pallion, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving while banned.

Officers seized a black Volvo XC90 in the Pallion Park district that they believe was involved in the crash. Investigators are still asking for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from that weekend to come forward to help with the case.

Roberts appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. He also faces charges for driving without insurance and taking a vehicle without permission. Floral tributes have been left at the scene as the local community mourns the loss of the Thorney Close resident.
