The award-winning show Matilda The Musical is performing at the Sunderland Empire in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, from February 11 to February 28, 2026. This production allows local residents to see a major touring show without having to travel to London or other large cities.
The production is part of a 15th-anniversary tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland created by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The show features music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly, under the direction of Matthew Warchus.
With a seating capacity of around 1,860, the theatre is one of the largest in the North East and is capable of hosting large scale performances. The Matilda The Musical team is also providing an education programme with school resources that link the performance to literacy and drama lessons.
Executive Producers Denise Wood and Griselda Yorke said they are pleased to bring the production to the historic venue so that families in the region can see the show locally. Tickets for the performances throughout the month are available through ATG Tickets.
