The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, as strong winds and heavy rain hit the area on Thursday 12 March 2026. The warning is set to stay in place until 8:00 PM and could lead to disruption on the roads and for those using public transport.
Wind speeds are expected to reach between 50 and 55 mph in most places, though coastal areas and locations downwind of high groundmight see gusts as high as 70 mph. These conditions are the result of an active weather front that is currently moving southeastwards across the country.
People living in the area are advised to secure any loose items in their gardens and to take care if they are walking on coastal paths. Commuters should keep an eye on transport updates and may want to avoid making any journeys that are not essential if the weather becomes more severe.
While widespread danger is not expected, the national weather service is asking residents to remain vigilant throughout the day.
