Sunderland in Tyne and Wear is experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures this week as heavy rain gives way to a much colder and clearer weekend. According to the Met Office, the weather began to change on 12 March 2026, moving from a damp and humid period to a more settled but chilly spell.

Temperatures in the area have fallen significantly over the last 48 hours, dropping from a high of 11.7°C on 12 March to near-freezing levels by the morning of 14 March 2026. Local readings showed the thermometer hitting between 0.9°C and 1.3°C in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The shift also brought an end to the very damp conditions seen earlier in the week, when humidity levels reached 96 per cent. Residents saw the rain stop on 13 March, leading into the drier and clearer nights that are now expected to continue.

Experts from the national weather service suggest that the clearer skies mean the cold conditions will likely persist throughout the rest of the weekend. People living in the city are encouraged to prepare for the freezing temperatures as the weather pattern remains settled.
