The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has started looking for new full-time firefighters to join its team in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. This recruitment drive is for the 2027 intake and aims to fill frontline roles at local stations including Sunderland Central, Farringdon, and Marley Park.

People who want to apply have until April 7, 2026, to submit their applications through the service’s official website. Successful candidates will begin a 15-week intensive training programme in January 2027 at the service headquarters in Washington.

The training programme covers essential skills such as using breathing equipment, responding to road traffic crashes, and providing trauma care. Recruits will also learn water rescue techniques, which are vital for responding to incidents along the River Wear and the local coastline.

The selection process involves an online application followed by physical tests like climbing ladders and working in small spaces. The service is looking for people who are committed to their community and can solve problems under pressure, regardless of their previous jobs.

This recruitment drive comes as the service prepares for a change in leadership with Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath retiring in March 2026. New recruits will be among the first to use the service’s modern training facilities for searching through collapsed buildings.
