Swadlincote, Derbyshire, is bracing for heavy rain and gusty winds tonight and into Friday morning that could cause flooding and travel disruption. The Met Office has issued a forecast showing a ≥95% probability of intense rainfall overnight Thursday into Friday, with the heaviest rain expected in the early hours of Friday — roughly between 03:00 and 10:00 GMT on January 30, 2026 — a period that is likely to affect the Friday morning school run and commuter traffic across the town.

Officials say the ground is already saturated following recent storms, including Storm Chandra on Jan 27, 2026, meaning much of the rain is likely to run off the surface and cause surface-water flooding. Easterly gusts of up to about 29 mph are also expected, which could worsen driving conditions. Known local trouble spots include William Nadin Way, Cadley Hill Road and sections of the A511 (near the Chesterfield Arms and Burton Golf Club).

The Environment Agency is monitoring river and stream levels in the area — specifically tributaries of the River Trent and the River Derwent in South Derbyshire — and local highways teams are standing by. Local media and historical reports note that the A511/A444 area and other low-lying roads have previously become difficult or impassable in similar weather; officials are urging motorists to take care and to avoid driving through deep water.

Residents should check official channels for the latest information: Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire County Council Highways or South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) for confirmed road closures and emergency updates.

South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) has emergency teams on standby and can coordinate sandbag distribution if needed. Bus passengers should check with local operators — for example Arriva or Trent Barton — for service updates, since routes such as the Route 2 have been diverted in the past when streets in Swadlincote have flooded.

If flooding threatens travel on Friday morning, commuters are advised to allow extra time, follow instructions from emergency services, and avoid driving through standing water. Journalists should verify early-morning (about 06:00) road-closure information with Derbyshire Police and check operators for any planned bus diversions.
