Hill Fog Could Reduce Road Visibility in Swadlincote

Drivers and walkers in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, should prepare for difficult travel tonight as thick fog moves across the region. The Met Office warns that extensive hill fog and light showers will lower visibility to less than 100 metres on higher routes from 6:00 PM on 1 February 2026.

The worst conditions are expected on higher roads such as the A511 through Woodville and the A514 near Hartshorne. Because of the local topography, the National Forest corridor and surrounding hills often see much thicker fog than the town centre, making it difficult to see other vehicles or the road ahead.

The Met Office is urging drivers to use fog lights and to increase the distance between vehicles when visibility falls below 100 metres. Local authorities including Derbyshire County Council are also advising caution; the fog is expected to be at its thickest between about 11:00 PM on 1 February and 9:00 AM on 2 February 2026, which is likely to affect the morning commute.

There are currently no active flood warnings, but the Environment Agency is monitoring saturation and moisture levels in the nearby Trent Valley, which can contribute to valley mist. Residents are encouraged to check live updates (Met Office and local authority travel pages) and to allow extra time for journeys through the higher parts of the county.
