Swadlincote Library in Derbyshire is launching new weekly and twice-monthly social groups to help residents meet neighbours and take part in low-cost activities. These regular meet-ups form part of Derbyshire County Council’s plan to shape the building as a community “living room” where people can gather for more than just borrowing books.

Every Thursday evening from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM the library runs a book group where people can discuss their favourite stories (check the events page or ask staff for details). The Derbyshire County Council events listing shows the book group timed at 5.30pm–6.30pm on Thursdays.

For those who enjoy crafts, a “Yarn and Yatter” session runs twice a month on Friday mornings from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. These sessions welcome people to bring knitting, crochet or other craft projects and chat while they work; attendees should confirm exact dates with the library as schedules can change.

The library has become an important local hub following announced closures of local high-street banking branches. In response, the site now supports pop-up banking sessions (arranged with banks and community partners). Residents can also explore the town’s mining and industrial history via the Local Studies collection housed at Swadlincote Library.

Derbyshire County Council recommends that anyone interested in the groups check the latest times and any booking requirements on the council events page, visit Swadlincote Library (Civic Way, DE11 0AD), or contact the Library Information Service. Note that the council introduced a revised county-wide library opening-hours timetable from 31 March 2025, so local session times may have been adjusted.

For enquiries, check the Derbyshire libraries events page or contact the Library Information Service on 01629 533444 or Swadlincote Library at the contact details listed on the council website.
