The South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) is offering to deliver sandbags to residents in Swadlincote and the wider South Derbyshire district who are at immediate risk of flooding but are unable to collect the equipment themselves. The move formalises local, ad hoc support aimed at protecting homes and helping the most vulnerable members of the community.
The help is intended for people who are physically unable to move heavy sandbags or who lack transport — for example, older people or those with mobility impairments. Residents can request delivery by calling the council on 01283 228713 (or 595795) during office hours, or by calling 01332 912642 out of hours (emergencies only).
While the district council says it has no legal responsibility to provide flood protection equipment, it works with Derbyshire County Council, the Lead Local Flood Authority, as part of the local response to properties at risk. The policy gained importance after Storm Babet in October 2023, which brought record rainfall and localized flooding across parts of Derbyshire.
The Environment Agency warns that sandbags that have been in contact with floodwater can retain contaminants such as sewage, oils or chemicals and that appropriate protective equipment — including gloves — should be used when handling them. Local guidance from South Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council advises that used sandbags should not be stored for long periods (no more than about three months) and should be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal as non-recyclable waste; residents should seek their local authority’s advice if they are unsure.
