Swadlincote bus station and the adjacent Civic Way car park will remain closed into April 2026 while workers complete improvement works that are part of Derbyshire’s wider £47 million Bus Service Improvement Plan. The site on Civic Way closed on 6 January 2026 to allow a major upgrade intended to make the area safer and easier for passengers to use.
During the works, passengers can board buses at temporary stops on Civic Way. South Derbyshire District Council has said services have been moved to two temporary stops on Civic Way (one opposite the Health Centre and the other opposite the Police Station); Travel Derbyshire lists several temporary stops serving diverted services. Operators including Diamond Bus East Midlands and Arriva are continuing to run services to those temporary stops to keep routes operating while the main station is out of use.
South Derbyshire District Council expects the car park to reopen in late March 2026, with the bus station due to reopen in mid‑April 2026. The scheme includes new bus shelters with additional seating and real‑time information screens to show expected arrival times.
To improve pedestrian safety, the layout will be reconfigured with a new combined entry/exit for the car park at the Civic Offices end of the site. Buses will be segregated from car park traffic and the site will get improved lighting, resurfacing, signage and more weather‑resistant shelters for passengers.
The work forms part of Derbyshire County Council’s county‑wide programme to modernise transport hubs. The Swadlincote works were pushed back into January 2026 after earlier delays and were timed to avoid disrupting the 2025 Christmas shopping period.
