A fleet of resurfacing crews will descend on 18 roads across Swindon this month as part of a summer repair blitz topping £1m. Swindon Borough Council confirmed works begin on 13 July and run through to the end of August, targeting routes including Frobisher Drive, Gainsborough Way, Colebrook Road, Eastcott Road and Marlowe Avenue.
Each road will close between 8am and 6pm while crews are on site, with the exception of Villett Street where work is scheduled overnight from 8pm to 6am. Repairs on each stretch are expected to last between one and four days. Signed diversions will guide other traffic around the closures, though residents will still be able to reach their homes. The council has written to affected households and businesses ahead of the programme.
The summer push follows a three-week scheme that resurfaced Blagrove Roundabout earlier this year. It forms part of the council’s annual road maintenance cycle, approved through its Local Transport Plan, which also covers reactive pothole repairs, refreshed road markings and traffic signal upkeep. In autumn 2025, a similar programme resurfaced 19 roads at a cost of just over £3.75m, part of a wider £5m investment that year. The authority has previously estimated its total road repair backlog at around £50m.
“Residents have been clear that improving our roads is a top priority, and this programme shows we are getting on with the job,” said Councillor Nick Gardiner, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport. “By targeting roads that need attention now, we can prevent more costly repairs in the future. We’re taking a planned, proactive approach, focused on fixing roads properly rather than relying on temporary measures.”
A further programme covering busier routes is expected later in the year, and the council’s four-year Local Transport Plan has allocated more than £29m to improve over 60 roads across the borough.
