Swindon Borough Council is opening 48 new school places for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities at two primary schools in Swindon, Wiltshire, by September 2026. The project is designed to provide dedicated support for students in their local area so they do not have to travel long distances to attend school.
The extra places are being created at Oaktree Nursery and Primary School and Mountford Manor Primary School. A new unit at Oaktree is already open and running following a £500,000 project to renovate the space and install new learning equipment.
This work is part of a larger £3.4 million programme funded by a grant from the Department for Education. The council eventually plans to create a total of 158 new places for children with special needs across the borough to meet the growing demand for specialist support.
According to the Blue Kite Academy Trust, which manages the Oaktree school, the expansion follows the recent opening of 20 specialist places at Robert Le Kyng Primary School. Council leaders say the aim is to ensure high quality support is available within regular local schools.
