Swindon Borough Council in Wiltshire is asking community groups and local residents to help name streets in new housing developments. The council wants to move away from using generic names and instead pick titles that celebrate the unique history and culture of the town.

People are being encouraged to suggest names that reflect notable historical figures, local landmarks, or the industrial and agricultural heritage of the borough. This initiative is designed to give new neighbourhoods a stronger identity and a sense of community as the area grows.

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, is leading the project to ensure new developments feel like a part of the existing town. When submitting a name, residents should provide a short explanation of why the choice is important to the history of Swindon.

All suggestions must be sent to the council by 31 May 2026 to be considered for use on future building sites. The council’s gazetteer team will check each proposal to ensure they are suitable before they are officially approved for the new estates.
