English Heritage has closed Buildwas Abbey, near Ironbridge in Telford, Shropshire, with the closure taking effect on 11 February 2026. The charity said the site is closed because of ‘exceptionally wet and muddy ground conditions’ that make the ruins unsafe for visitors.

English Heritage warned the ground is so saturated that it presents several hazards, including slippery steps and unguarded drops obscured by mud. The organisation also cited risks such as falling masonry from the 12th-century stone ruins, which can become unstable when foundations are waterlogged.

The full-site closure also suspends operations of the volunteer-run second-hand bookshop at Buildwas Abbey. English Heritage’s volunteer role description confirms volunteers help run the second-hand bookshop on site and that proceeds support the upkeep of the property.

The move follows flood alerts for the River Severn in Shropshire issued by the government’s flood service (GOV.UK). Buildwas Abbey sits on low-lying meadows beside the river and is prone to flooding and waterlogging during periods of heavy winter rain.

Local businesses that usually benefit from visitors to the ruins may see fewer customers while access is blocked by barriers and signage. English Heritage says the site will remain closed ‘until ground conditions improve’ and it is safe for visitors to return.
