Residents in Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, can collect free supplies to help lower their utility bills at a series of community events starting on April 4, 2026. Climate Action Hub Telford has organised the sessions in partnership with Marches Energy Agency (MEA), trading as Marches Energy Advice, to provide practical tools and professional advice to the local community.
The “Sustainable Saturday” sessions will run throughout 2026 on April 4 (spring kick-off), June 6 (summer efficiency), August 1 (mid-year community day), October 3 (winter prep) and December 5 (emergency cold weather support). Visitors can pick up home energy kits containing LED lightbulbs, draught excluders, insulating tape and appliance timers to help reduce heat loss.
The kits also include humidity sensors to help residents monitor for damp and mould, and electric blankets — promoted by MEA as a low-cost way to reduce heating needs when used safely. Fire services advise users to take appropriate safety precautions and have electric blankets checked regularly. All the items are provided free to help households become more energy efficient and manage the cost of living.
Each session will feature a free communal lunch and refreshments for attendees who take part in activities such as community gardening. Experts from Marches Energy Agency, including its Telford Energy Advice team, will be on hand at events to explain how to use the items effectively and to offer tips on making homes warmer.
The project aims to support residents who may not qualify for major government retrofit grants but still want to reduce their energy use. Further information on local support is available through the Keep Shropshire Warm scheme run in partnership with Shropshire Council.
