Shropshire Council has confirmed that improvements are underway for litter bin collections across the county, following a recent change in service contractors that caused temporary delays.
Since 1 April 2026, Kier Group has taken over direct responsibility for emptying litter bins in areas outside Shrewsbury. Previously, this work was carried out by idverde, which worked as a subcontractor under the council’s existing highways maintenance contract.
The transition between these two companies resulted in some delays as staff members worked to learn new collection routes and procedures. The council is also currently waiting for the arrival of new vehicles to support the service.
To address these issues, the collection process has now been fully digitised. Every bin is being recorded in a new system, which allows for collection routes to be mapped out more efficiently. According to the council, these changes should lead to a more effective service once the transition period is complete.
Local officials expect that the current service issues will be resolved by the end of May 2026. In the meantime, residents who notice a bin that needs attention are encouraged to report it to the council through their website at improvingyourroads.shropshire.gov.uk.
