Shropshire Council is asking residents for their views on a plan to ban right turns at the Coppice Green Lane junction in Shifnal, Shropshire. The public consultation, which begins on 5 March 2026, aims to make the road safer and reduce long traffic queues.
The proposal comes because Coppice Green Lane is a very busy route used by families going to Idsall School and visitors to the Acoustafoam Stadium. Council officials believe stopping cars from turning right will improve local air quality by preventing vehicles from sitting with their engines running while they wait for a gap in traffic.
This new plan follows earlier efforts to manage traffic in the area, including a proposal in November 2025 for a 20mph speed limit and speed bumps to protect school pupils. According to Councillor Edward Bird, there has been increasing pressure to find solutions after local people recently rejected a different plan to change nearby Innage Road.
If the new traffic rules are approved, drivers will need to use different routes to get to the middle of the town or the M54 motorway. At the same time, the council is also looking at adding road humps to Curriers Lane, with that separate consultation remaining open until 26 March 2026.
