Telford & Wrekin Council has announced plans to create more than 100 new specialist school places in Telford, Shropshire, to help children who need extra support with their learning. The proposal is part of a £1.7 million investment to develop specialist ‘SEND hubs’ within mainstream schools so that, the council says, families do not have to travel long distances for education.

The council expects most of these new places to be available for the September 2026 intake. Documents published by Telford & Wrekin Council say the project is intended to increase local capacity and help reduce waiting lists for children with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The announcement comes days before the 15 February 2026 statutory deadline for naming a school on EHCPs for children transferring phases.

The programme will create specialist provision across a number of sites in the borough, including work linked to Millbrook Primary School, where a SEND hub has been developed in partnership with Haughton School. (Separately, Telford Park School is undergoing a large mainstream expansion — adding around 300 mainstream places due for completion by September 2026 — which is not part of the SEND hub programme.)

Staff from Haughton School will help operate some of the specialist provision as part of the council’s Specialist Provision Hubs network. The council says the hub model is intended to provide more places closer to home and to expand support for pupils with additional needs.
