Retailers and contractors at Telford Centre are stepping away from the tills and into homemade karts as ‘The Telford Centre Turbos’ gear up for the town’s first-ever Krazy Races soapbox derby on Sunday 12 July at Telford Town Park. The team will face off against crews from the centre’s own facilities management contractors Westgrove, who handle housekeeping and security, and ABM, who run maintenance, turning the UK’s largest touring soapbox event into a three-way internal contest.
Alongside the shopping centre’s trio, families and local businesses from across Telford can enter teams of their own and chase prizes for Best Dressed kart, Best Design and Fastest Kart. The event, delivered in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council, is free to attend and marks the soapbox derby’s debut in the town. Danny Scoffin, Head of Brand & Strategic Development for Krazy Races and a Telford native, said bringing the award-winning event home was “incredibly special,” after previous stops pulled in more than 250,000 visitors nationwide with celebrity racers including Maya Jama and YouTuber Chunkz.
The top ten fastest teams on the day will go head-to-head for the overall winner’s trophy, while the wider event village lays on street food, live performances and family activities. Telford & Wrekin Council’s 2026 programme page described the soapbox challenge as an established crowd-puller that has already raised more than £250,000 for good causes across its five-year history. For the Telford race, Lingen Davies Cancer Support has been named as the official charity partner.
Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for leisure, tourism, culture and the arts, urged residents to get involved. The Telford Centre said they were “very excited” to field a squad, while Telford & Wrekin Council confirmed the derby is a free, all-day fixture in its 2026 events line-up.
