The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning that includes Thorpe St Andrew, Norfolk, as heavy rain is expected to move across southern England and East Anglia on 2 February 2026. The Met Office says the rain will strengthen overnight into 3 February and could cause surface water flooding and longer journey times for people travelling into and out of the town.
The Environment Agency is monitoring local river levels on the tidal River Yare. The agency warns of a tide-locking effect, where high tides at the coast can restrict the normal drainage of the Broads river system and cause water to back up and overflow into low-lying riverside areas such as the River Green. (As of 4:04pm on 2 February 2026 there were no flood alerts in the tidal River Yare area.)
The Met Office warns that roads such as the A1242 (Yarmouth Road) are at risk of surface water flooding, so drivers should take care. Traffic may also be slower because local roadworks have reduced route options: Thorpe St Andrew Town Council and Norfolk County Council notices show footway works/temporary closures on Thunder Lane (works started in November 2025 and have been scheduled to run into February 2026) and an updated temporary restriction on the A1242 has been published.
Historical river-level records compiled by River Levels UK and local reports show this combination of heavy rain and high tides has caused problems in the past — for example during Storm Henk in January 2024. Residents in riverside properties and commuters using the eastern corridor into Norwich are advised to monitor updates from the Met Office, the Environment Agency (check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk), Thorpe St Andrew Town Council, and Norfolk County Council overnight for any changes to warnings or local safety advice.
