Torbay Council has confirmed that working/assistance dogs are permitted on all Torbay beaches, including those in Torquay, year‑round. The change ensures that people who rely on assistance dogs can visit the coast even during the busy summer period when pet dogs are usually banned.

Seasonal restrictions typically bar dogs from some popular beaches between 1 May and 30 September. For example, Torre Abbey Sands is subject to the full seasonal ban, while Meadfoot Beach is partly restricted — the south‑western part is banned during that period, but the north‑eastern part is allowed for dogs all year round. Torbay Council’s official guidance makes clear that assistance dogs are exempt from these seasonal bans.

Both Torbay Council and the Tor Bay Harbour Authority ask that assistance dogs wear a visible vest or harness so other beachgoers know they are working. The request is intended to reduce confusion and help everyone understand why the dog is permitted on the sand.

Local residents can find detailed, beach‑specific information online (for example on the Torre Abbey Sands page). For further questions, the harbour authority can be contacted by email at harbour.authority@torbay.gov.uk or by calling the Torquay Harbour Office on 01803 208443.
