Families in Torquay can now access new free nature activity kits at Torquay Library following the launch of the Outdoor Explorer Club by Libraries Unlimited on 13 May 2026.

The new resources are designed to help families connect with nature and include beach leaflets, activity booklets with sticker sheets, and downloadable or audio stories. To ensure the programme is inclusive for all children, the materials feature accessibility tools such as Widgit symbols, easy-read text, large font, and page numbers. Families can also request braille and easy-read versions of the stories free of charge through the Re/Habilitation Officer for Visually Impaired Children service at Devon County Council, which supports children with vision and sensory impairments up to the age of 18.

The project was co-produced by young people with special educational needs and disabilities, including students from Bidwell Brook School in Dartington, alongside several outdoor organisations such as the National Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor National Park, Forestry England, and Sound Communities. This collaborative approach received national recognition in March 2026 when Beth Harris, the health and wellbeing development manager at Libraries Unlimited, presented the project at the Libraries Connected Innovation Gathering.

Residents interested in picking up the materials can visit the library located on Lymington Road or contact staff by calling 01803 714452. Alex Kittow, chief executive officer of Libraries Unlimited, highlighted the initiative as part of the organisation’s ongoing commitment to community inclusivity across Devon and Torbay.
