The Met Office has issued a warning for Torquay, Devon, as a deepening low-pressure system moves across the southwest, bringing hazardous conditions to the coast. While the system begins its onset on Thursday, February 12, 2026, the most severe weather—including gale-force winds and very rough seas—is expected to develop late on Friday, February 13.
The incoming weather is expected to cause significant waves and heavy spray along coastal promenades and beaches. Small boat owners and commercial fishing crews are being strongly advised to seek safe haven and secure their moorings before the onset of gales on Friday evening, as water conditions could become dangerous for smaller vessels.
The Tor Bay Harbour Authority is encouraging all maritime users to check for local restrictions and safety notices before heading out. Local ferry services between coastal towns, such as those operating between Torquay and Brixham, may also face cancellations or delays if the sea becomes too rough for travel.
According to the National Oceanography Centre, “very rough” sea states are defined by wave heights between four and six metres. People are urged to stay away from the water’s edge and check with local transport providers for updates on any potential closures or service changes.
