Torbay Council has reached an agreement to change the layout of the taxi rank on Vaughan Road in Torquay, Devon. The temporary plan, announced on 5 March 2026, aims to provide a dedicated space for drivers and passengers while work continues to improve the town’s harbourside.
Workers from SWISCo are set to carry out improvements on the site between 9 March and 13 March 2026. This phase of the project will involve removing tarmac to bring back nearly five metres of green space, with new plants and landscaping to follow.
The council worked with local shop owners, taxi operators, and community groups to find a solution that balances transport needs with the local desire for more green areas. This arrangement ensures that shoppers and residents still have access to taxis during the transition period.
While this setup is only temporary, the council plans to remove the rank completely in about three years as part of the wider project to restore the historic Pavilion. These changes could happen sooner if more funding becomes available for future improvements on Victoria Parade.
