The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for rain affecting Torquay and the wider Torbay area on Thursday, 5 February 2026. Forecasters say heavy, persistent rain associated with a low‑pressure system will arrive overnight and is likely to bring widely 15–30 mm of rain, with 30–40 mm possible in some places, increasing the risk of surface‑water flooding.
The Met Office and Torbay Council are advising drivers to take care, particularly along the seafront. Torbay Road (the seafront) may be closed during severe conditions — the route has been closed during previous events when waves overtopped the sea wall. Strong coastal winds and wave overtopping could deposit debris on the carriageway and make driving hazardous for morning commuters.
With the ground already saturated from earlier winter rainfall, runoff is likely to occur quickly into low‑lying streets. Local flood studies, including the RainGain report, identify Fleet Street and Union Street among areas historically vulnerable to rapid surface‑water flooding because steep surrounding hills channel water into the town centre.
Torbay Council says it is monitoring the situation and stands ready to manage road closures and flood defences. Residents can follow live local water‑level information on the government ‘Check for Flooding‘ service.
