Drivers across Walton-on-Thames face weeks of disruption as SGN gas network upgrades close lanes and slow traffic on several key roads. Surrey County Council lists Garden Road in Walton North as the longest-running project, with works starting today and not expected to finish until 27 August 2026.

Nearby, First Avenue and Second Avenue have been affected since mid-May. Second Avenue is scheduled to clear on 17 July, while First Avenue will remain under works until 29 July. In Walton Central, Terrace Road repairs began on 30 June and are due to end on 14 July. The council warns that temporary traffic lights and lane closures are in place, and journey times will be longer than usual.

The works form part of SGN’s £1 billion RIIO-GD3 Business Plan, which launched in April and targets more than 566 kilometres of annual mains replacement across southern England. Similar upgrades are underway in Epsom, Cobham and Whyteleafe, reflecting a county-wide push to modernise ageing gas pipes. The Terrace Road project specifically runs from property number 101 to the Thamesmead junction.

Additional schemes add to the pressure. Manor Road in Walton Central has SGN works until 24 July, and Sandy Way is not expected to clear until 21 August. On Kings Road, Affinity Water is carrying out repairs until 17 July. Residents are advised to check the council’s roadworks map before travelling and to allow extra time for all local journeys.
