Warrington & Vale Royal College has announced it is offering free English and maths courses for adults aged 19 and over, starting from September 2026. The college, which operates campuses in Warrington and Winsford, aims to help residents build confidence and improve their employability through these qualifications.
The courses available include English Functional Skills, English GCSE, Maths Functional Skills, and Maths GCSE. According to the UK Government, around 8 million adults in the UK have maths skills below those expected of a primary school child, which can limit access to higher-level study and well-paid employment. Under the Adult Skills Fund statutory entitlement, adults in England aged 19 and over without a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and/or maths are eligible for free study up to level 2.
The college, which holds a GOOD rating from Ofsted following an inspection in November 2024, highlights how these qualifications can open new doors. One former student, Charlotte Howman, enrolled on a Level 2 Diploma in Health while studying for her GCSE English at the college. By gaining this qualification, she was able to progress onto a Level 3 Diploma and now hopes to to begin university this September to study Paramedic Science at the University of Staffordshire.
