Warrington’s award-winning Sky Garden has been handed a £20,000 boost from the National Lottery Community Fund to expand its free events and activities this summer. The rooftop oasis, perched above Golden Square shopping centre and run by Culture Warrington, will put the cash towards a programme of family-friendly happenings designed to bring more people into the green space.

Tree Fest in July and Animal Antics in August are the headline acts, with a green wellbeing course for adults also on the cards. The garden, which opens during usual shopping centre hours, has already proved its worth since launching four years ago, counting nearly 700 schoolchildren through its educational visits. Its environmental credentials were polished last year when it scooped Gold at the International Green Apple Environment Awards 2025.

Culture Warrington announced the windfall on 29 May, outlining plans to use the money to promote biodiversity and community connection in the town centre. The charity, which manages a string of Warrington’s cultural venues, detailed the plans on its website, calling the funding a chance to build on the garden’s track record as a haven for wildlife and learning.

The Sky Garden occupies the roof of Golden Square, a joint effort between Culture Warrington and the shopping centre, and has become a regular stop for families, shoppers, and community groups looking for a breather from the high street below. With the new programme of events, its stewards hope even more people will discover the space over the coming months.
