The WWT Washington Wetland Centre in Tyne and Wear has closed for the day on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, because of high winds forecast for the area. The decision was made as a safety precaution to help protect visitors, staff and the wildlife that live on site from potential hazards such as falling branches or damage to enclosures.
Staff at the centre in Pattinson, Washington (NE38 8LE) plan to reopen on Wednesday, 28 January 2026 at 10:00am. The centre says it will only reopen after a thorough post-storm inspection to make sure paths and habitats are clear and secure following the wind event.
According to WWT’s official visit page, “If you have pre-booked tickets we will be in touch soon to rearrange.” Visitors with ticket queries can contact the centre at info.washington@wwt.org.uk or on 0191 416 5454.
The reserve — a popular local attraction noted by MySunderland — is home to species including Asian short-clawed otters and Chilean flamingos. WWT normally keeps the site open most days of the year, but managers say short-term closures for operational or safety reasons (including extreme weather) are sometimes necessary.
For the latest information on reopening and updates, check the centre’s official website.
