Newbottle Foodstore & Post Office on Front Street has a new owner after a deal brokered by specialist property adviser Christie & Co. Local buyer Palanivel Kumarasamy has taken over the convenience store and postal counter, securing the future of a business that has served the village for four decades.
Outgoing owner William Render ran the shop for 28 of its 40 years under the same family. He stepped away as part of a planned retirement. The freehold asking price stood at £500,000, though the final sale figure remains undisclosed. Funding came through Michael Colledge at Christie Finance. Kumarasamy, who already runs five other businesses across Tyne and Wear, described the store as a vital pillar of the community and said he was honoured to take the reins.
A full refit is set to begin soon, with the new owner aiming to improve the shopping experience while keeping the everyday essentials and post office services residents depend on. The store stocks groceries, newspapers, chilled drinks, alcohol, and tobacco, and its postal counter has become even more important after the village lost its Cooperative shop and another post office in recent decades.
Rob O’Brien, senior business agent at Christie & Co, said the combination of a trading village shop with a residential property in a busy market drew strong interest. The store sits within Newbottle’s conservation area, known for eighteenth-century architecture and its tapered village green, making it a valued fixture between Durham and Sunderland. William Render said the buyers want what is best for the village and will only make things bigger and better.
