Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) has launched its 2026 wholetime firefighter recruitment campaign, with Washington a key focus for new permanent wholetime posts. The intake is intended to fill dozens of vacancies created by scheduled retirements and to support the service’s wider Community Risk Management Plan.
Applications opened on 9 February 2026. Prospective applicants should consult the TWFRS careers page or the live vacancy listing for the confirmed closing date and full application details (TWFRS has asked applicants to check the recruitment pages for updates).
Successful candidates will undertake a 15-week initial training course at the Service Headquarters before being posted to stations across the county, including Washington Community Fire Station on Glover Industrial Estate (Spire Road), Washington, NE37. The recruitment process includes online application and behavioural assessments, fitness testing (including the multi-stage shuttle/bleep test), role-specific practical assessments and competency-based interviews, followed by medical and pre-employment checks.
Local leaders say the intake should help stabilise crewing levels at Washington and across the service so specialist appliances can be properly manned for incidents on the A1(M) corridor and at nearby industrial sites. TWFRS has positioned Washington as a strategic deployment hub between Newcastle and Sunderland under its 2024–2027 Community Risk Management Plan.
The drive forms part of a wider TWFRS shift toward proactive community safety and prevention work. TWFRS documentation also indicates minor improvements were made to the Washington station in 2025 to increase capacity for training cohorts, but the service should be contacted for precise details and confirmation of those works.
