Residents in Washington who rely on the local library are seeing changes to opening hours as part of new adjustments by the Sunderland City Council. Starting in March 2026, the Washington Town Centre Library, located within The Galleries shopping centre at Independence Square, has moved its weekday opening time from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM.

In addition to the later morning start, the library has also reduced its late-night service on Wednesdays. The branch now closes at 6:00 PM on Wednesdays, rather than the previous 7:00 PM. Weekend visitors will not see any change, as the library maintains its Saturday hours of 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The site remains closed on Sundays.

These adjustments follow the local authority’s recent budget approval for the 2026/27 financial year, which includes a 4.5% council tax rise and a requirement to find £600,000 in savings. Council leadership has noted that the authority faces a significant funding gap of £36.3 million in the coming years, which is driving efforts to manage public service budgets across the city.

Operated as part of Culture House Sunderland, the venue serves as a key community resource and has been rebranded as a Creative Smart City Hub. Despite the change in hours, the library continues to offer its updated facilities, which include a children’s library space, a teen zone, a digital music lab, a podcasting studio, and public computer access. It remains one of the three primary library locations in the city, alongside the City Library and Houghton Library, as detailed by LibraryOn.
