Washington Library is marking its 50th anniversary with a week of special events for the community, starting on 20 April 2026. The milestone celebration will culminate in a dedicated event on Saturday 25 April 2026 at the library, which is located at The Galleries in Washington.

The library has served the local area since its opening in 1976, a time when the town was undergoing major changes following its 1964 designation as a New Town. Sunderland City Council, which operates the facility as part of its wider library service, is inviting residents to join in the celebrations to recognise five decades of community service.

Today, the library offers a range of modern amenities for the town’s population. These include a children’s library space, a dedicated area for teenagers, and a local studies centre. To support modern learning and creativity, the library is also equipped with a digital music lab, a podcasting studio, and various computer units.

As part of wider efforts to improve local services, a new £27m cultural hub, Culture House Sunderland, is also preparing to open in the city centre during the first half of 2026. These developments build on the town’s long history as the ancestral home of the Washington family, from which the first United States president, George Washington, descended.
