Watford Borough Council finished a month-long project to deep clean and improve streets across Watford, Hertfordshire, on February 24, 2026. This work aimed to make local public spaces safer and more welcoming by carrying out intensive cleaning and repairs that go beyond daily maintenance.

Workers cleared between one and three tonnes of waste, leaves, and rubbish from each of the 26 targeted roads. These streets were located across several neighbourhoods, including Callowland, Leggatts, Holywell, Vicarage, Oxhey, and Central Watford.

The project included jet washing footpaths, scrubbing off graffiti, and clearing out drains to help rainwater flow away. Along with cleaning, teams also carried out important repairs to road and pavement surfaces to make them safer for residents to use.

The council said the work was made easier by residents who moved their cars to give cleaning teams better access to the kerbs. This project was a priority for Mayor Peter Taylor after the council was named Council of the Year 2025 by the Improvement and Efficiency Social Enterprise (iESE).
