Residents in Watford looking to get active this summer can now access a new range of free, guided Health Walks, with the latest timetable covering the period from May to August 2026. The programme offers 22 different routes, providing options for all fitness levels, including gentle beginner walks, more challenging hikes, and family-friendly choices.

The scheme is coordinated by Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service and receives funding from Public Health Hertfordshire. It has been active since 2001 and remains a popular way for locals to improve their fitness and meet new people. Participants often report significant long-term health improvements, with 70% of walkers feeling more physically active, 65% feeling healthier, and 59% reporting stronger social connections a year after they begin.

To celebrate National Walking Month, a mass health walk event is planned for Wednesday 6 May 2026, featuring 20 different routes across the county. These walks are supported by over 300 trained volunteers who help lead more than 100 walks every week during the summer season. The programme also includes a dedicated Family Friendly First Steps timetable.

Dr Richard Pile, a local GP and lifestyle medicine physician, has endorsed the walks as a practical and accessible way to boost wellbeing. He encourages healthcare professionals to refer patients to the programme as a way to support their health. For those interested in leading the walks, free, nationally accredited volunteer training is available, with the next session taking place on Thursday 21 May 2026 in Stevenage. Further details on the local routes and how to join can be found through Watford Borough Council.

Last year, the programme saw significant participation, with 692 walks held across Watford and Three Rivers alone, resulting in over 8,382 attendances. Across the entire county, the initiative hosted more than 4,369 walks between April 2025 and March 2026, attracting over 56,835 participants.

The Ramblers Wellbeing Walks organisation provides accreditation for the scheme, which remains one of the largest walking programmes in the country.
