Nine drivers from the Wellingborough area have appeared in court following Northamptonshire Police’s month‑long winter campaign to catch drink and drug drivers. These court appearances are the first wave of results from the crackdown aimed at keeping local roads safer.

Northamptonshire Police carried out intensive checks as part of Operation Limit beginning on 1 December 2025; some police reporting extends the activity to 2 January 2026. Officers targeted key local routes — including the A45 — and carried out roadside checks to stop drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the festive period.

Most of those appearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court face, if convicted, a mandatory minimum 12‑month driving disqualification and potentially an unlimited fine. GOV.UK guidance notes magistrates can impose up to six months’ imprisonment for drink‑driving offences; more serious offences heard at Crown Court carry higher maximum sentences.

The local crackdown aligns with the UK Government’s Road Safety Strategy published in January 2026, which aims to reduce preventable deaths on the roads. Northamptonshire Police say they name drivers charged during the winter campaign as a deterrent; the force’s Policing Plan 2025–2028 also emphasises reducing road harm.

Residents are being encouraged to help keep their community safe by reporting dangerous driving. Members of the public can submit dashcam or doorbell footage through the Operation Snap portal; for incidents where life is in immediate danger call 999, and for non‑urgent reports call 101.
