Families in Welwyn Garden City can take part in a new, free Children’s Book Trail running from Friday 22 May to 6 June 2026. The event, which forms part of the town’s ongoing centenary celebrations, invites residents to explore the town centre while searching for train-themed books displayed in the windows of twelve local shops.

To join the trail, participants should collect a map from either the Welwyn Garden City railway station or the local library. The trail features twelve participating businesses, including the Salvation Army, The Works, Lamberts Flower Company, and various independent shops such as Willow Shop WGC, Academy Now, Oxfam Welwyn Garden City, Johnson Cleaners WGC, Village and Co, Wrights Estate Agents, Stonehills Hair, Messages Party Shop, and Ashtons Estate Agents.

Once families have matched the shops with the books shown in their displays, they can enter a prize draw for book vouchers worth £30, £20, or £10. Completed forms should be posted in the collection box located next to the escalators on the ground floor of the Howard Centre, which is conveniently connected to the railway station.

The event is organised by the All Aboarders, a volunteer group established in 2018 that focuses on station maintenance, heritage, and community engagement. The initiative has been brought to life with support from Hertfordshire County Council and Great Northern Railway.
