Tesco has announced it will cut around 180 jobs at its head office in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, as part of a plan to modernise its business operations. The supermarket giant shared the news in late February 2026, explaining that the move helps the company adapt to changing shopping patterns and a shift toward online services.

While some staff will lose their positions, Tesco also plans to create approximately 250 new roles within existing teams at the same site. Chief executive Ken Murphy stated that these changes are necessary to keep the business efficient and agile while responding to the needs of its customers in a competitive market.

The retail union Usdaw expressed disappointment at the decision, noting that the cuts come at a time when the company continues to perform strongly. Local MP Andrew Lewin is monitoring the situation closely, as the community has also seen workforce reductions at the nearby Ocado Group facilities.

This announcement follows a previous round of changes in early 2025, when the retailer cut around 400 roles across its head office, bakeries, and mobile phone shops. For the workers currently affected at the Welwyn Garden City headquarters, a formal consultation period has now begun to discuss the proposed redundancies.

The job changes arrive as Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council prepares for its own administrative transition. Local leaders are focusing on the impact these shifts will have on families and the wider economy as workers look for new employment in the area.
