The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for fog across Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, that is expected to cause difficult driving conditions on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The fog is forecast to be at its heaviest during the morning rush hour, potentially reducing visibility to less than 100 metres for commuters.

Visibility could drop as low as 50 metres on parts of the A1(M) motorway between Junction 4 and Junction 6. National Highways (East) is expected to use matrix/electronic signs to warn drivers to slow down and stay alert while travelling through the area.

Forecasters say the damp conditions follow Storm Goretti in January 2026, which left the ground saturated and helped conditions for dense fog to form. Hertfordshire County Council is monitoring local roads, and overnight temperatures are likely to stay slightly above freezing.

The Met Office forecasts the fog should start to lift by about 11:30am, leading into a clear and sunny afternoon. Temperatures are expected to reach around 7°C once the mist has fully cleared.

Drivers are encouraged to use dipped headlights rather than relying solely on daytime running lights and to leave plenty of space between themselves and the vehicle in front. Local reporting in the Welwyn Hatfield Times has highlighted that areas such as the Clock interchange (Junction 6) can be particularly hazardous when visibility is low.
