Residents in Welwyn Garden City are being encouraged to participate in a series of free events aimed at supporting nature and climate action during Great Big Green Week, which runs from 6 to 14 June 2026. The programme is a collaboration between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and the Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District.

A central feature of the week is a free gardening session held by CultureWood CIC on 9 June. Taking place between 10:00 and 12:00 at the King George V Playing Fields on Beehive Lane, the event is open to all residents regardless of experience. Volunteers will assist with various tasks in the community garden area, including litter picking, managing hedgerows, weeding the meadow, and constructing dead hedges.

The week also includes a Chats for Change coffee morning, expected to be held at the Hatfield Swim Centre on 8 June. This event serves as an opportunity for residents to learn more about environmental initiatives and local support for home improvements. The council is currently promoting several energy efficiency schemes, such as ECO Flex 4, the Home Upgrade Grant 2, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants of up to £7,500.

These initiatives support the council’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, a goal bolstered by over £6.4 million in government funding secured in March 2025 to improve the energy efficiency of local homes. Cllr Max Holloway, then Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Economic Development and Climate Change, noted at the time that these programs help residents reduce energy costs and create more comfortable living environments.

Residents seeking further information or support regarding home energy efficiency can contact Better Housing, Better Health at 0800 107 0044.
