Residents in Wolverhampton are being reminded that a High Court injunction prohibiting street racing and car cruising remains in full effect across the city, as well as in Sandwell and Walsall. Following a review hearing on 26 February 2026, the legal order has been extended until at least 1 March 2027.
The City of Wolverhampton Council, working alongside partner authorities in Sandwell and Walsall, secured the renewal to continue curbing dangerous driving gatherings. The injunction forbids individuals from taking part in street racing as a driver, rider, or passenger. It also prohibits the promotion, organisation, or publicising of such gatherings, and bans anyone from attending events as a spectator between 3pm and 7am on weekends and bank holidays.
Data provided by West Midlands Police through their Operation Hercules tactical response unit shows that the measure has successfully led to a significant decrease in organised street racing activity, particularly between April and November 2025. The original injunction was first put in place in December 2022 following a fatal incident in Oldbury, which resulted in the deaths of two teenagers.
Breaching the terms of the injunction is considered contempt of court. Those found in violation face serious potential penalties, including up to two years in prison, unlimited fines, or the seizure of assets such as their vehicles. While Dudley Council withdrew from the joint injunction in February 2026, they have stated they intend to use alternative local powers to address the issue within their area.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected street racing activity. Information can be submitted by calling the police on 101.
