Emergency crews were called to a major fire at the Stoneacre Motor Group Ford dealership on Jockey Lane in York on the afternoon of Monday 6 April 2026. The blaze broke out at approximately 16:46, sending thick black smoke over the nearby LNER Community Stadium during a match between York City Football Club and Altrincham.

More than 8,000 fans were in attendance at the stadium when the fire started, and many supporters leaving the ground raised the alarm. The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed six fire engines to the scene, with crews arriving from Huntington, Tadcaster, Acomb, Selby, Knaresbrough, and Malton. Additional support units, including an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser, were also used to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters utilised breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, main jets, and ventilation fans to tackle the incident. While the smoke was visible from the stadium and surrounding areas, there have been no reports of any injuries. Local residents and spectators were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while emergency teams worked at the site, where crews remained until at least 6.20pm.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has now been launched. Fire service staff revisited the dealership on Tuesday 7 April 2026, and fire investigation officers have begun working to determine how the blaze started.
