York’s Murton Park is set to host a two-day History Festival on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August 2026, offering families in York and North Yorkshire a chance to step back in time. The event, running from 10am to 4pm each day, will transform the 14-acre attraction into a lively showcase of living history, with reenactments, hands-on activities, and demonstrations spanning multiple eras.

Entry to the festival is free for annual pass holders, while standard admission includes access to all activities. Organisers have confirmed a packed programme featuring several established reenactment groups, including the Roman Military Research Society, who will display Roman Army skills such as infantry drills and archery, and Jorfor’s Hall Vikings, who will bring Viking household life to life with crafts, cooking, and warrior training.

The festival will also feature suffragette reenactments by Meridith Towne, World War II Home Front displays by Glynnis and Tony, and Women’s Land Army activities where visitors can try tasks like milking a cow or collecting eggs. For younger visitors, FacePaintYork will offer face painting from 11am to 3pm (ages 3+, charges apply), while The Cone Exchange will run free family craft activities. Train rides on the Derwent Valley Light Railway will also be available, with separate charges applying.

Murton Park, located at Murton Lane, York YO19 5UF, is already known for its living history sites, including a Roman fort (Brigantium) and a Viking village – both open to general visitors during weekends and school holidays – as well as a prehistoric village and a WWII Home Front evacuee area used exclusively for school visits. The History Festival builds on the venue’s reputation for immersive experiences, drawing together established groups like The Frei Compagnie (medieval Wars of the Roses) and The Yorkshire Knight, who will host a knights’ tournament with horseback riding and combat demonstrations.

For families looking to make the most of the summer holidays, the festival offers a mix of education and entertainment, with something for all ages. The event is part of Murton Park’s growing calendar, which already includes Viking Markets and Christmas experiences. Visitors can find more details or plan their trip on the Murton Park website.
