Two local men have been arrested by North Yorkshire Police following a break-in at a shop on Gillygate in York on 25 February 2026. The incident happened at about 4:30 AM at the Vapes & Phones shop when two people smashed their way into the premises.
Security measures inside the shop, including a loud alarm and a smoke-filled cloaking device, were triggered during the break-in. These safety systems forced the suspects to flee the scene empty-handed toward the Bootham area.
Officers tracked the two men, aged 45 and 38, to an address in the city where they were arrested at 3:20 AM on 26 February 2026. One suspect had arrived at the shop on a bicycle while the other was on foot.
The York Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team is currently part of a force-wide staffing expansion, with North Yorkshire Police aiming to have a total of 112 officers and 122 community support officers across its neighbourhood teams by March 2026. Police are now asking any drivers with dashcam footage from the Gillygate area at the time of the burglary to come forward to help with the investigation.
