Students and staff at the University of York should prepare for changes to their usual travel plans, as First Bus is reducing campus bus services for the Easter holiday period.
From Sunday 29 March to Saturday 11 April 2026, the operator will move to a non-term timetable. This change affects key routes across the Heslington campus, which is split into two main areas, Campus East and Campus West, separated by about a mile. For those who rely on the U1 and U2 buses to get between these areas or into the city centre, the frequency will drop from every 15 to 20 minutes to just one bus every 40 minutes.
Other campus services will see more significant changes. The U3 and U4 routes will not operate at all during the two-week break. Meanwhile, the UN1 night service will only run on Fridays and Saturdays, with departures scheduled hourly between 00:30 and 03:30.
While these campus-specific routes are changing, the wider city bus network is expected to operate as normal throughout the holiday. Additionally, Park & Ride services will see an increase in the number of buses in operation during the same period.
First Bus advises passengers to download the First Bus App or check their website for the most up-to-date travel information. The University of York and its student body have historically engaged with the operator over transport concerns, with the University of York Students’ Union previously leading a campaign regarding service changes, and local representatives like York Outer MP Luke Charters continuing to engage on the issue of local bus provision.
