The City of York Council in North Yorkshire has cancelled a budget meeting that was set for February 23, 2026, after councillors reached an agreement on spending plans. The budget for the 2026/2027 year was successfully passed during a meeting held on February 12, 2026. This second date was only a backup in case officials could not agree on the first attempt.

Under the new plan, residents will see their council tax increase by 4.99 per cent. Council leader Cllr Claire Douglas said the process of setting the budget was difficult because the city is facing a 20 million pound loss in national funding.

Opposition groups, including the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives, had suggested different ways to save money such as cutting certain staff roles. However, these proposals were not included in the final plan, and the council will move forward with the current administration’s budget.

Residents who intended to watch or speak at the cancelled meeting are encouraged to check the records from the February 12 session. A video of the decision-making process is also available to view through the council website.
