Residents in York will have the opportunity to share their views on proposed changes to local ward boundaries as the Local Government Boundary Commission for England begins a new phase of public consultation on 28 April 2026. The review aims to ensure that councillors represent local communities fairly and that the number of electors in each area remains balanced.

The commission, chaired by Professor Colin Mellors, has confirmed that the total number of councillors at City of York Council will remain at 47. Currently, these councillors represent 21 different wards across the city, with each ward electing between one and three members. This political structure currently consists of 24 Labour members, 19 Liberal Democrats, 3 Conservatives, and 1 independent councillor.

This upcoming period is the second stage of the electoral review process. An initial consultation, which asked residents for their thoughts on local identities and community boundaries, concluded earlier this year on 2 February. The new phase of consultation will allow the public to provide feedback on specific boundary proposals and is set to run until 6 July 2026.

Following the conclusion of this phase, the commission expects to publish its final recommendations on 29 September 2026. Any resulting changes to the electoral arrangements will be subject to approval by the UK Parliament before they take effect in time for the council elections in May 2027.
